The Welsh Government is responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Wales, including the economy, health, education, and local government.

The role of the Welsh Government is to exercise functions devolved to it in order to: make decisions on matters which affect people’s daily lives; develop and implement policy; make subordinate legislation (eg regulations and statutory guidance) and propose Assembly Measures (Welsh laws).

Arts Council of Wales

The Arts Council of Wales is responsible for funding and developing the arts in Wales. The Welsh Assembly Government provides the Arts Council with money to fund the arts in Wales and it is responsible to WAG for the way this money is spent. The Arts Council of Wales is also the distributor of Lottery money for the arts in Wales, allocated by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), based in London.

Literature Wales

Literature Wales (formerly Academi) is the National Company for the development of literature in Wales. Literature Wales includes Yr Academi Gymreig / The Welsh Academy - the society for writers in Wales, and Tŷ Newydd Writers’ Centre.

Literature Wales’ many projects and activities include Wales Book of the Year, the National Poet of Wales, Writers on Tour funding scheme, writing courses at Tŷ Newydd, Translators’ House Wales, the BayLit and Tŷ Newydd festivals and Young People’s Writing Squads. It also has fieldworkers working specifically to develop literature activity in the south Wales valleys and north Wales.

The services offered by Literature Wales for writers include mentoring, writers’ bursaries, information and advice and independent manuscript assessment.

Welsh Language Board

The Welsh Language Board is a statutory organisation, sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government. It was established in December 1993 under the terms of the Welsh Language Act. Its main function is to promote and facilitate the use of the Welsh language.

The current members are appointed by the Heritage Minister of the Welsh Assembly Government, and the Board has a staff of over 70. Under the Government of Wales Act 1998, the Board became answerable to the National Assembly, having previously been accountable to, and funded by The Welsh Office.

CyMAL

CyMAL: Museums Archives and Libraries Wales is a division of the Welsh Government. CyMAL represents a significant investment by the Welsh Government in the development of local museums, archives and libraries services to meet 21st century needs.

CyMAL cooperates with the Welsh Books Council in developing the gwales/libraries website.

National Library of Wales

One of the six copyright libraries in the United Kingdom and Ireland. A mountain of knowledge about Wales and the world is to be found at the National Library – millions of books on every subject, thousands of manuscripts and archives, maps, pictures and photographs, films and music, and electronic information.

The National Library cooperates with the Welsh Books Council in the Welsh journals digitisation scheme, and exchanging information between the NLW catalogue and Gwales database.

WJEC

WJEC was established in 1948 as the examining body for Wales, with additional major responsibilities in the areas of education, culture and language.

WJEC provides examinations, assessment, professional development, educational resources, support for adults who wish to learn Welsh and access to youth arts activities. WJEC’s Welsh and Welsh-medium educational resources and professional development programmes promote the literacy of children and young people.

CILIP Wales

The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) Wales came into being on 1 April 2002, and is a Branch of the UK Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (UK CILIP).

CILIP Wales asserts that high quality library and information provision is a fundamental requirement for an informed, democratic, and bilingual society in Wales and through its members it seeks to make such provision available to all.

Wales Literature Exchange

Wales Literature Exchange works to facilitate the translation of Wales' literature. Translation grants are available to publishers. We participate in international book fairs, and work with translators, publishers and festivals abroad to promote the literature and writers of Wales internationally.

Urdd Gobaith Cymru

The Urdd is an exciting, dynamic movement for children and young people. It organises a range of different activities across Wales.

Several projects are collaborated between the Urdd and the Welsh Books Council, including the promotion of the Tir na n-Og Awards, and the Welsh-language Children’s Poet Laureate.

The British Council

The British Council is an international body which promotes learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and aims to build lasting cultural relationships between the UK and the international community. The British Council (Wales) has many partners: Welsh Assembly Government, Arts Council of Wales, Higher Education Funding Council of Wales, Welsh Language Board, Welsh Books Council, Fforwm, and Wales Tourist Board.

Books from the Past

Books from the Past is an on-line collection of books of national cultural interest which have long been out of print, and are unlikely to be reprinted by traditional means. The texts are available in two forms - images of the original book pages, together with a fully searchable electronic text which is also suitable for printing.

Developed by Culturenet Cymru and the Welsh Books Council, Books from the Past is a resource freely accessible to all.

S4C

Independent television companies are responsible for producing the majority of S4C’s programmes. Each week S4C broadcasts over 80 hours of Welsh language programmes across a range of platforms, including television and broadband. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport finances S4C.

Bardd Plant Cymru (the Wales Children's Poet Laureate) is a joint scheme between S4C, Urdd Gobaith Cymru, The Welsh Books Council and The Welsh Academy.
