FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR THE WELSH-LANGUAGE PRESS

The Welsh Books Council announced today that Golwg Ltd. will be the recipient of the funding allocated by the Welsh Assembly Government towards developing the Welsh-language Press.

The tender was advertised following the announcement by the Minister for Heritage, Rhodri Glyn Thomas, that an annual sum of £200,000 for a period of three years had been allocated to develop the Welsh-language Press, and that the funding would be administered by the Welsh Books Council, as the organisation responsible for developing the publishing industry in Wales.

Professor M. Wynn Thomas, Chairman of the Welsh Books Council, said: 'The Panel was unanimously persuaded that Golwg offered the most complete and balanced new initiative, both exploiting the potential of the new technology to the full and reinforcing existing print provision. Particularly significant was the fact that this multiplatform application was soundly based on established journalistic experience.'

The Welsh Books Council will now begin detailed discussions with Golwg on the implementation of this exciting new initiative.
